Islamophobia Is Racism: Resource for Teaching & Learning about anti-Muslim Racism in the United States. ["This syllabus reframes “Islamophobia” as “anti-Muslim racism” to more accurately reflect the intersection of race and religion as a reality of structural inequality and violence rooted in the longer history of US (and European) empire building. Conceptually, a focus on anti-Muslim racism is connected to an analysis of history and forms of dominance – from white supremacy, slavery and settler colonialism, to multiculturalism and the security logics of war and imperialism – that produce various forms of racial exclusion as well as incorporation into racist structures. Our primary focus is on the manifestation and impact of anti-Muslim racism in the United States. At the same time, this syllabus insists on thinking about anti-Muslim racism as a global project that overlaps and intersects with the exclusion of other marginalized groups (e.g. Black, queer, Latinx, immigrant, indigenous, etc). It also connects the histories of various racial logics that reinforce one another, including anti-Muslim racism, anti-Black racism, anti-Latinx racism, anti-Arab racism, and anti-South Asian racism. By focusing on understanding Islamophobia as anti-Muslim racism, this syllabus challenges the idea that the problem is one of individual bias and that simply knowing more about Islam will necessarily lead to a decrease in anti-Muslim racism. Instead, it suggests that learning more about how structures of violence, inequality, and war have produced anti-Muslim racism and discrimination and its wide-ranging impact on everyday life is essential in order to challenge its assumptions, logics, and practices.” ]https://islamophobiaisracism.wordpress.com/

Societal understandings of "good Muslims" are just as narrow as its conception of the "bad Muslim" terrorist. From Attire's Mind [9/4/2019]: "In six years of
posting Attire’s Mind I have never presented only
one post for a particular day. Today is an
exception, because what I see here is of such
moment. / Scotland has officially created a tartan
to honor its Muslim citizens. This is far more that
simply being a sop. This is a signal that they are
not only just a full part of Scotland now, but
family. Clans, as defined by tartans, are large
scale families, and the totality of them
encompass the family of the Scottish people.
/ I have, as most of us have, felt bereft and
sad about the darkening trend of our world.
Things like this make me smile, and make me
see that we are not finished, we are not
entirely trodden under. As long as I can
see such a fulsome acknowledgement of the
presence and value of a community of people
in our midst, I will continue to be hopeful. /
I hope the Muslim people of Scotland can wear
this tartan with pride. / Honestly, this is the
face of the growing global community, and
this is the face of the future of the Attire
Language. / Here are the meanings of the
various parts of the tartan you see here.
-Blue to represent the Scottish Flag
-Green to represent the color of Islam
-Five white lines running through the
pattern to represent the five pillars of Islam
-Six gold lines to represent the six articles
of faith
-Black square to represent the Holy Kabah

However, the representations circulated by retail companies are reductive of Muslim-American identity. “Edward Said on Orientalism,” an “engaging and lavishly illustrated” interview [40:31 / 1998] with Edward Said, author of Orientalism, a seminal academic work exploring “subtle and persistent Eurocentric
prejudice against Arabo–Islamic peoples and their culture”; cultural
prejudices that are derived from a long tradition of romanticized images
of Asia and of the Middle East, and which, in practice, functioned as
implicit justifications for the colonial and the imperial ambitions of the European powers and the U.S. Moreover, in Orientalism, Said further described, criticized, and denounced the social, economic, and cultural practices of the ruling Arab élites who, Said claims, as imperial satraps, have internalized the romanticized “Arabic Culture” created by British and American Orientalists." [from Wikipedia entry on Dr. Said's book, Orientialism.] Also see Adam Schatz in the New York Review of Books: ‘Orientalism.’ Then and Now (May 20, 2019). [Excerpt: "The Orientalism of today, the Orientalism of Fox News, Bat Ye’or’s “Eurabia,” and Steve Bannon, is an Orientalism based not on tendentious scholarship but on an absence of scholarship. Its Eurocentrism, which feeds off the idea that Europe is under threat from Muslim societies and other shit-hole countries, is an undisguised conspiracy theory. It has spread not by way of bookshops and libraries but Twitter, Facebook, and the Dark Web. And under Trump, the remodeling of American foreign policy along the lines of Israeli strategy—which is to say, an increasing reliance on military force in its dealings with Arabs and Muslims—has been consummated, with support from conservative Jews and even greater support from Evangelicals.”]
“What is Islamophobia?” from Islamophobia Research Documentation Project [IRDP], University of California, Berkeley
"Frequent reports of honor killings, disfigurement, and sensational abuse have given rise to a consensus in the West, a message propagated by human rights groups and the media: Muslim women need to be rescued. Lila Abu-Lughod, who has been writing about Arab women for thirty years, challenges this conclusion in DO MUSLIM WOMEN NEED SAVING? The book is an indictment of a mindset that has justified all manner of foreign interference, including military invasion, in the name of rescuing women from Islam. It offers a detailed, moving portrait of the actual experiences of ordinary Muslim women, and of the contingencies with which they live."

Why Muslims Do NOT Condemn Terrorism? by Heraa Hashmi (ICNA-MAS Convention)
“At the Islamic Society of North America’s 2017 conference, Hashmi told how she was sitting in her class at the University of Colorado Boulder last year when another student sat down nearby. As their professor began lecturing on the the role of religion in European history, her classmate looked at Hashmi and asked, abruptly, “Why are Muslims so violent — and if they’re not, why don’t they condemn it?” / She told her classmate it was unfair to hold her to that standard, to ask her to apologize for the actions of a few, to paint an entire religion of 1.6 billion people with the same brush. / The conversation quickly turned tense, and Hashmi went home frustrated. She spent the next three weeks working on a 712-page spreadsheet listing examples of Muslim groups and leaders condemning violence, terrorism, sexual abuse, police brutality and more. / She posted the spreadsheet on Twitter, and within 24 hours it had been shared more than 15,000 times. With the help of two software developers who saw the tweet, Hashmi then turned her viral list into an online database that is continuing to expand. / Hashmi’s website has been well-received, and last year it helped earned her the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research’s Muhammad Ali Confident Muslim Award. But she told TRT World she now fears that the very act of amassing Muslim criticism of terrorist acts might be playing into a false dichotomy of peace-loving, moderate“good Muslims” versus the America-hating “bad Muslims.” [From Aysha Khan, "Seventeen years after 9/11, Muslims are still ‘presumed guilty,’” Religion News Service (RNS), September 10, 2018.]

[Excerpt: "By describing the theological structure of intercessions that led to the practice of shtadlanut, I analyse how Jewish communities were “accommodated”, internally divided between “good” and “bad” Jews, and “managed” or institutionalized by the ruling powers. While this political-theological structure is no longer overtly in place, it is my contention that the structural mechanism of exclusion it produced reappears in an adapted form today in the form of top-down managed Muslim councils in many European nation-states. After providing an account of this practice, I focus on the power dynamics of this practice (noting of course that it was by no means homogeneous). In structural terms, shtadlanut is a process that forces a heterogeneous population into a controlled vertical homogenized power structure thereby encouraging internal conflict. An adaptation of the Roman divide et impera, this political-theological structure depoliticizes and fragments marginalized groups, prevents resistance and struggle, and regulates subjectivity by limiting agency. By way of conclusion, I return to the context of Europe today to consider how the traces of this structure and practice function in relation to Europe’s “Muslim Question”.]
Torrens, Maria. "Is Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim policy really something new in the United States? “ Salam Plan: Journalism Against Hate, July 18, 2018. [Excerpt: "Wiretapping Muslims and Arabs in a generalized way for considering them “potential terrorists” happened for the first time in the 60’s of last century, professor Louise Cainkar of the Catholic Jesuite Marquette University in Wisconsin explained. At that time, Arab visiting students were interviewed and controlled by agencies like the NSA….With Richard Nixon as president of the US, the “profiling program got institutionalized”, Cainkar said….“The discourses, representations and policies shifted after the Iranian Revolution. From Arab to this much wider group of Muslims”, she said. That was when the “Middle East” concept came into place. While ‘Arab’ and ‘Muslim’ do not mean the same thing, American policies seem to have treated both as synonymous. The fat Jewish banker was replicated by the fat oil sheikh and the blood-thirsty Jewish subversive/anarchist was replaced by the equally demonic-looking Arab terrorist. It was striking how they were so similar in content and form. Greedy, dark, sinister, hook-nosed men who had taken advantage of us, absconded with “our wealth,” and were now holding us hostage to their evil intent….We’ve learned to be mindful of anti-Semitic tropes. The same must apply to how we talk about Arabs, Gulf Arabs, in particular. It is legitimate to raise serious policy concerns about the environment, or trade, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, or other human rights abuses. But it unacceptable to use racist caricatures or bigoted stereotypes in making those legitimate points.”]

But while we have a century of such behaviors, the Trump era has elevated them to a level so dangerous it is imperative that they now finally be confronted and defeated. During the 1920s, in the midst of the nativist wave that was sweeping the country, Congress added the Arab East to the list of countries and regions excluded from sending immigrants to the United States. In presenting the legislation, the sponsoring senator said, “we don’t need any more Syrian trash in America.” This ban lasted more than two decades, during which time there was no legal Arab immigration to the United States.”]

“Reel Bad Arabs - How Hollywood Vilifies a People.” "This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs--from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists"--along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today. Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific US domestic and internationl policies on their lives. By inspiring critical thinking about the social, political, and basic human consequences of leaving these Hollywood caricatures unexamined, the film challenges viewers to recognize the urgent need for counter-narratives that do justice to the diversity and humanity of Arab people and the reality and richness of Arab history and culture.”
The "Riz Test” … "Launched by a team of two film buffs from academic and tech backgrounds. Just like most Muslims we're tired of seeing the same old stereotypes and Islamophobic tropes being played out in Films and TV Shows. Taking cues from the Bechdel Test and inspiration from Riz Ahmed's 2017 speech on diversity, we decided to create a set of criteria to measure how Muslims are portrayed on Film and TV. By doing so we hope that we can start a conversation, to raise awareness and to affect change."

“Since 9/11, Bill Maher has devoted himself to mainstreaming the toxic narrative of Islamophobia. With a captive audience of millions, the support of a major cable network, and a steady stream of celebrity guests, including no shortage of self-styled progressives, Maher has largely succeeded in his goal. / Dan Cohen’s video compilation represents the most shocking exposé to date of Maher’s corrosive impact, laying bare the raw bigotry he pumps out, night after night. / According to Maher, “Islam is the motherlode of bad ideas,” the Quran is a “hate filled holy book,” and “the Islamization of Europe” is underway. / “Their cultures are not like ours,” Maher said, justifying the exclusion of Syrian refugees from the West. “They're worse!” Maher said of Muslims, branding Islam as “the only religion that acts like the mafia.” / Maher claims Muslims “bring that desert stuff” to the West, and that “if Muslim men could get laid more, we wouldn’t have this problem.” “Talk to women who have ever dated an Arab man,” Maher insists. “The reviews are not good.” / In Maher’s mind, moderate Muslims don’t exist. As the Iraqi army fights to retake cities controlled by the Islamic State, Maher denies that Muslims are battling ISIS. / “Hundreds of millions of [Muslims]” support terror, according to Maher. “Most Muslim people in the world do condone violence,” he claims. / Ironically, Maher is a top supporter of Israel’s violence against occupied Palestinians, particularly in the besieged Gaza Strip. In fact, he personally offered himself as an asset to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. / “I love Israel, but, you know, if you fuck with them, they will blow the fuck out of you,” Maher declared. / Maher has hand-picked guests who amplify with his toxic views of Muslims. They include his longtime friend Ann Coulter, who has taunted Muslim American students, “Take a camel!” and once exclaimed, “Raghead talks tough, raghead pays the price.” / Maher marketed his hosting of Milo Yiannopolous, the most prominent face of the neo-Nazi “alt-right,” as a defense of the free exchange of ideas. But when Milo appeared on stage with Maher, the exchange quickly turned into what the Washington Post described as a “bromance.” / In the era of Trump, when Islamophobia is being transformed into government policy, Cohen’s shocking video compilation raises an important question: How much longer will we continue to tolerate the kind of intolerance that Islamophobes like Maher have built their careers on?” [Grayzone Project, 2/20/17]

"So, my argument basically is that it’s not
enough to understand Islamophobia simply
as hate crimes, although hate crimes do exist;
it’s not enough to understand it as religious
intolerance or microaggressions or hate speech
and so on, although we do know that all this
exists; but to look at the roots of where it
comes from, because what happens when you
don’t do that is that people accept the rhetoric
coming from people at the top of society….
it’s important to see that racism is baked
into the security logic of the national security
state in the U.S., as well as in terms of how
it operates abroad, because if we don’t
understand where something is coming
from, we can’t target the roots, and therefore
dismantle it.” [“Islamophobia and the

“Riad Alarian: How Attempts to Humanize Muslims Often Do the Exact Opposite” “In their various iterations, these videos are ultimately a very sad attempt to prove Muslims are worthy of the same respect and belonging that all other people should have. While these videos aim to show the viewer that Muslims are a culturally and ethnically diverse group, they do so without saying anything about Islam itself, letting the viewer’s biases about the religion guide her conclusions. If anything, by identifying Muslims exclusively with nondenominational factors, these videos take a step in the direction of secularizing Islam, which Muslims must steadfastly reject. The American Muslim community’s impulse to defend itself against a political culture that is increasingly hostile toward Islam is completely understandable—and necessary. In the way Malcolm X, the African-American Muslim leader, once urged his coreligionists not to wait idly by for liberation to come, and, instead, take concrete steps to accomplish this themselves, Muslims must continue on this path today. The whitewashed, “humanizing Muslims” industry is certainly not the way to accomplish this.” The full article [from Muftah, June 18, 2016] can be accessed by clicking on the image above, or by clicking here. ["Many progressives who claim to oppose Islamophobia actually uphold the security state’s framing of key issues, keeping its oppressive framework in place….it is crucial to critically assess some of the liberal arguments against Islamophobia that are often put forward by people like Trudeau, as well as by many activists who would situate themselves to the left of him. Many of these arguments, while appearing to be anti-Islamophobic, actually uphold the national security state’s framing of issues. In doing so, the dominant economic and social framework that underlies Islamophobic laws and policies, and the racist ideas incorporated within it, remains in place — thereby impeding our ability to move beyond it.
