Those who wear the BDS label should be
treated exactly as we treat any anti-semite
or bigot. They should be exposed and condemned.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister

Every day more and more Jews, Muslims,
Christians, and secularists across the world are
endorsing the BDS campaign for Palestinian
rights. I am proud to join academics such as
Stephen Hawking, Judith Butler, and Noura Erakat,
journalists such as Naomi Klein,
Maureen Clare
Murphy,
and Philip Weiss, musicians such as Brian
Eno, Gil Scott-Heron, and
Khaled Jubran,
activists such as Omar Barghouti, Ghassan
Andoni, and Ali Abunimah, and Nobel Peace
Prize winners Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire,
and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel in support of the global
movement for
Boycott, Divestment and
Sanctions (BDS)
.

Michael Levin, just another horn player

BDS has allowed Palestinians to put their
rights back in the center of discourse and action
around Palestine and the so-called ‘peace process.’
The liberal Zionist agenda that long dominated
and shaped the Oslo process was focused on
Palestinian ‘statehood’ — illusory though that
has proven to be — as a means of securing a
Jewish majority and therefore Jewish supremacy
throughout Palestine. Of course that agenda,
the ‘two-state agenda’ was predicated on the
denial of the rights of the majority of Palestinians
who would not benefit from statehood.

Ali Abunimah, activist, author; co-founder of
The Electronic Intifada

Those who claim that BDS hurts
Palestinians are not just making unfounded
claims and failing to understand how resistance
is always costly at first; they are also patronizingly
telling Palestinians that they understand our
interests better than we do. We reject this
colonial attitude completely. Nothing hurts
the Palestinian people and the Palestinian
economy like Israel’s racist and colonial
oppression.

Omar Barghouti, Palestinian
human rights activist; founding committee
member of the Palestinian Campaign for
the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel

BDS is not antisemitism. Do business
with Jews, organize with them, love them.
But don’t support – militarily, economically
or politically – the machinery of an
apartheid-state. We can’t do business as
normal because conditions in the Holy Land
are totally abnormal. Please tell your government
that mere words of concern are insufficient.
They don’t change anything. The appropriate
response when confronting injustice is to take
real steps to confront and eradicate it.
Beware of antisemitism, and all other forms
of racism, but beware also of being cowed
into silence by those who seek to stifle criticism
of the oppressive politics of Israel by labeling
you antisemitic.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Israel does not have two different economic
ecosystems, like, Israel within the green line
and Israel over the green line. If you want to
divest from the West Bank, Judea and Samaria,
you have to divest from Israel, which means
you boycott Israel completely.

Ron Brummer, chief of operations in Israel’s
Ministry of Strategic Affairs and Hasbara [2018]

This is the major danger I see facing the
black community at the present
moment – to be
so conditioned by the system as to make even
our most well-considered resistance to fit within
the system [of Bantustans] both in terms of the
means and the goals.

Steve Biko, South African anti-apartheid activist
[I Write What I Like, 1978]

There is a simple reason for the Israeli
government’s vast investment in undermining
the right to boycott: BDS is working. But it’s vital
that the right is protected. The three tenets of
the BDS movement – to end an occupation, to
achieve equal rights and to repatriate refugees
– shouldn’t be controversial. To believe that they
threaten the existence of the ‘Jewish state’ is
to admit that the state is inherently antithetical
to those values.

~ Amjad Iraqi, Palestinian citizen of Israel
[London Review of Books, 2018]

In this case, however, a nonviolent call for
popular resistance has been placed before us.
Thus, for those of us that believe God hears
the cry of the oppressed and demands that
we do the same, the BDS call represents a
direct challenge to our faith. Will we be like God,
and hearken to their cries, or will we be like Pharaoh
and ignore them? / As a Jew, as an American, as a
person of conscience, I would suggest this call
presents us with nothing less than the most
consequential spiritual challenge of our time.

Rabbi Brant Rosen

Awe celebrate comrade Joe Slovo we
also recognize the growing number of Jews
across the world, including those in Israel,
who are supporting the Palestinian struggle
against Israeli Apartheid and specifically
backing the non-violent boycott, divestment
and sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign.
As we salute comrade Joe Slovo we also salute
progressive pro-Palestinian Jewish
organizations including South African Jews for
a Free Palestine (SA JFP), Jewish Voices for a
Just Peace (JVJP), Jewish Voices for Peace (JVP),
Jews for Justice for Palestinians (JFJP) and the
various other similar structures from around
the globe. The struggle and boycott against
South Africa was not directed against White
people but against the Apartheid regime,
likewise the struggle against Israeli Apartheid
is not against Jews but against Israel’s
violations of international law and human
rights abuses.

~ BDS South Africa [commemorating and
celebrating anti-apartheid icon Joe Slovo]

 According to a recently-passed Israeli
law, a citizen who advocates for a boycott
of Israeli services, institutions or products,
either in Israel or the West Bank, can be
sued in civil court and a serious financial
penalty imposed. A plaintiff need not show
damages in order to win his case; it is
enough to convince the judge that there
is a potential for damage. Since +972
Magazine has no financial resources, we
decided that we had no choice but to
censor ourselves. None of the contributors
to this site is permitted to express a
position either against or in favour of
the global BDS (Boycott, Divest and
Sanctions) movement. Since +972 is
also responsible for the comments,
we delete any mention of BDS in the
comment threads.

Lisa Goldman, writing in the
blog-based web magazine +972

As long as Jewish Israelis who do
not support BDS think it is possible to
change from within, they are like the
parable of the rabbit who wanted to
change the lion from within. So the lion
ate him.

Dr. Ruchama Marton, founder and
president of Physicians for Human
Rights – Israel.

she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can

accusations of demonisation, double standards, and

Linda Ronstadt’s arguments against the
cultural boycott ring both hollow and
familiar. Her central charge — it doesn’t
make sense to boycott any particular place
given that racism exists everywhere
— misses the point completely. After all,
the logic of the cultural boycott was not
that racism existed in South Africa, but
rather the fact that South African liberation
movements (and later the United Nations)
were specifically requesting it. These
organizations had provided a clear
reference point for action and solidarity,
which artists like Ronstadt decided to
ignore while deferring solely to their own
personal judgement. This is a feature
which is also lost in contemporary debates
over the boycott of Israel, which tend to
repeat many of the exact same arguments.
The simple answer to the question of “Why
Boycott Israel?” and not elsewhere is
precisely because it is a response to the
call from Palestinians themselves.”]

There’s a supreme irony in Israel’s
current all-out war on BDS.  A boycott played a critical
part in one critical episode in modern Jewish history.
In 1933, American Jewish leaders organized an
international boycott of Germany.  The campaign was
extremely effective.  Over five years, German trade
declined dramatically and its economic recovery was
impaired.  In response, the Germans developed, together
with the Yishuv Zionist leadership, the Haavara
Agreement, which enabled Germany to barter the
plundered property and valuables of German Jews.
In turn, it transformed German Jewish wealth into
products exported by the Third Reich to Palestine
in order to facilitate the expulsion and resettlement
of these Jews in Palestine. By signing this agreement,
the Zionists gained the looted proceeds of Germany
Jewry in the form of German goods, which in turn
provided an economic and demographic boost to the
Yishuv. But there was another, more disturbing impact:
the Jewish-led boycott campaign was sabotaged
and ultimately failed because a major portion of the
world Jewish community rejected and abandoned it.
Meaning that the most effective tool that world Jewry
devised to combat the Nazis was torpedoed by
Ben Gurion.”]

"In response to growing Palestine solidarity
activism globally—and particularly in
countries that have been traditional allies
of Israel—the Israeli government has
launched a well-resourced campaign
to undermine such efforts. A key element
of this campaign consists in equating
Palestine advocacy; the Boycott, Divestment,
Sanctions (BDS) movement; and
anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. The
concerted effort to delegitimize solidarity
with the Palestinians is taking place even
as genuine anti-Semitism is on the rise,
thanks to the resurgent white nationalism
of the Far Right in Europe and North
America—political forces that Israel is
harnessing to help shield from scrutiny
and accountability its apartheid policies
toward Palestinians, both citizens of the
state as well as those under military rule.
In its efforts to conflate anti-Zionism with
anti-Semitism, the Israeli government is
assisted by non-state organizations that
nonetheless enjoy close ties with the state
and its agencies.”]

Israel Fights Back Against BDS: Ali Abunimah on The Battle for Justice in Palestine

Palestinian Freedom Conference (Pt 10) [2019]: "BDS, A Strategy To
Help Free Palestine #3 - Omar Barghouti” / "Equality is the key to
rights, the BDS movement believes, and it is therefore the sine
qua non for a just and lasting peace. The most profound human
right, is the right to have equal rights, irrespective of one’s identity,
as enshrined in The Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But to
achieve equality, freedom and justice must be realised, as many
rights and justice movements all over the world keenly understand.
Our diverse struggles for economic, social, racial, gender, and
climate justice, objectively share one common commitment to
and passion for justice, for ending oppression, for attaining true
equality, and living in dignity. The intersectionality of our
struggles is extremely important. Our oppressors are more
unified than ever. And our oppressions are more intersectional
than ever. It is high time for all of us to explore the
intersectionality of our resistances. Divided we fail, united
we prevail."

"It’s important to remember that calling for politically motivated
boycotts is a legitimate means of voicing protest and expressing
opposition. You don’t have to support a boycott to defend the
freedom of expression of those who employ it as a nonviolent
tool in their battle against governments and corporations.”

"Criminalizing Dissent: The Attack on BDS & Pro-Palestinian
Speech, a panel featuring Cornel West, Linda Sarsour, Shaun
King, Omar Barghouti, Tim Wise, and Dima Khalidi, was held
at the UMass-Amherst Fine Arts Center on Nov. 12, 2019 in
front of a capacity crowd despite being condemned by
university officials and right-wing pro-Israel pressure
groups. The panel addressed mounting efforts by U.S.
political leaders, right-wing lobbying groups, and college
and university administrators to silence pro-Palestinian
speech on American campuses and criminalize support
for BDS, a nonviolent movement that seeks to pressure
Israel to end its violations of Palestinian human rights.
Topics included the recent bipartisan vote by the U.S.
House of Representatives to condemn BDS, a new U.S.
Department of Education policy that threatens to
withdraw federal funding from institutions that allow
pro-Palestinian speech critical of Israeli policy, and a
formal statement issued by the chancellor of UMass
condemning the event."

"We are deeply concerned by Sydney Festival’s refusal
to sever its ties to the apartheid regime of Israel
, despite
urgent calls from a cross section of artists and organisations.
The Festival has made the decision to accept funding from
the Embassy of Israel, making the embassy a Star
Partner….In response to the concerns raised by artists
and community members, Sydney Festival has claimed
to be a “non-political” organisation. This statement is
disingenuous. Existing on stolen land is political. Making
art is political. The Sydney Festival Star Partnership with the
Israeli Embassy serves to artwash the Israeli regime’s violent
control over the lives of Palestinians and enables the apartheid
state to continue to breach the human rights of Palestinians
with impunity….We will not perform in or attend a Festival
where the Israeli regime rainbow-coloured logo is used to
artwash the violence, ethnic cleansing, and crimes inflicted
upon the Palestinian people. Palestinian civil society has
called for a cultural boycott of the Israeli regime, inspired
by the boycott of apartheid South Africa and their struggle
for freedom. Artists, authors, creators, and performers the
world over have played a critical role in this collective act of
solidarity and resistance, speaking out and taking action in
support of the boycott movement. In doing so, they have
